KfW: KfW is executing three projects.

  • Financial Co-operation

1.Water Loss Reduction Programme Aleppo (€ 22,8 M) (a further additional  
   
amount of € 6,5 million is likely to be committed in 2003)

            - Rehabilitation/optimisation of water supply network of the City of Aleppo
            - Project-Status: Pre-selection of Consulting Services for Hydraulic Network   
    
Analysis and Feasibility Study upon approval of MoHU/SPC, start of
     Consultant‘s activities envisaged for end of 2003 (if no further delay)
            - Consulting Services for project preparation to be financed by Studies and
     Experts Fund (€ 2,5Mio, for all FC-projects in preparation)

  2. Water Sector Programme Barada Basin/Damascus Rif Governorate (€ 20,2  
      
M) (a further amount of € 6,5 million most likely to be allocated in 2003)

           - Rehabilitation/extension of water supply and wastewater treatment  
  
infrastructure in small and medium sized towns in the semi-urban area south of
   Damascus City
 
- Project status: same as Aleppo

  3. Higher Institute for Water Resource Management (€ 5,1 M)

         - Training and education courses for water and sanitary engineers, economists,   
          
administrative and management staff.
         - Practical managerial, operational and technical skills with regard to Integrated  
          
Water Resource Management.
         - Project status: Preparation of Pre-Selection for tendering Consulting Services
           to elaborate the conceptual/feasibilty study.
  • Techinical Co-operation

1. Advisory Services to the Ministry of Housing and Utilities (€ 0,76 M)

        - Enhancing capability of technical personnel of MoHU with regard to preparation  
 
of bilateral co-operation projects in the field of water supply and sanitation
        - Project status: start of assignment scheduled for April, 2003; total duration 6
          years;1st phase 2 years (1 long-term expert, short term experts for different  
          
subjects

  2. Joint Working-Group Water Resource Management Strategy

        - Supporting the elaboration of a comprehensive water sector strategy for Syria
        - Team members: Representatives of Syrian Ministries responsible for water  
 
sector issues, two water and sanitary experts of KfW and GTZ
        - First discussions held between  7-16 January, 2003 in Damascus on:
          draft ToR for Integrated Water Resource Management Plan (IWMP), guidelines  
 
and core elements of the water sector strategy priorities and  
 
next steps to be taken with regard to the elaboration of the IWMP
 - Pursuing discussion in June 2003 did not reach a conclusion on the scope of  
 
work.  Details delayed after completion of government negotiations in July 22,
 2003-07-01
